The Cross Spread

35 € for the analysis

Often referred to as the 5-card cross spread, this is the essential Tarot de Marseille method for analyzing a situation, answering a specific question, or understanding the underlying obstacles of a problem.

When should you ask the question?

The question is asked at the very beginning of the process, before shuffling the cards.

How to properly phrase your question?

The Tarot de Marseille provides excellent results with open-ended questions focused on action and advice, rather than closed predictions ("Yes / No").

🟢

Favour guidance questions: "How is my professional situation evolving, and what attitude should I adopt to succeed in my interview?" — this reveals assets, obstacles, and actionable advice.

❌

Avoid closed questions: "Will I get this job?" — risks a vague or passive answer.

☞

Write down your question right now, before shuffling the cards — this is precisely the first step of the protocol below.

This question will be carried over to the analysis page, so that the written reading directly addresses what you asked.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Phrase your question

Before picking up the deck, clearly define what you wish to know. Speak your question aloud, or repeat it clearly in your mind.

  2. Shuffle with intention

While shuffling the cards, keep your question in mind. This is known as "imbuing" the cards with your intention.

  3. Cut and spread

Cut the deck using your left hand (the hand of the heart and intuition), then spread the cards face down in a fan shape.

  4. Draw the cards

Select the first 4 cards while focusing on your topic, then draw the 5th card — the synthesis.

  5. Lay out the cards

    3Top — Direction 1Left — Strengths 5Center — Synthesis 2Right — Obstacles 4Bottom — Outcome
    • Card 1 (Left) — what works in your favour: your strengths, external support, or positive present factors.
    • Card 2 (Right) — what stands against you: obstacles, what to avoid, hidden fears, or resistance (external or internal).
    • Card 3 (Top) — direction / action: the response of the mind, what to aim for, strategy to adopt, or higher context.
    • Card 4 (Bottom) — result / evolution: the likely future outcome if you maintain the current dynamic.
    • Card 5 (Center) — synthesis: the key to the situation or core summary of the question.
